The process is relatively quick, typically taking only a few minutes from start to finish.
- Consultation & Anatomy Check: A professional piercer first assesses your navel shape. Not all anatomy is suitable for a traditional piercing; for instance, a deep-set navel may require a “floating navel” piercing to avoid irritation.
- Preparation: The area is cleaned with a surgical-grade disinfectant. Your piercer will then mark the entry and exit points with a surgical pen while you are standing or lying down.
- The Puncture: Most professionals use a sterile, 14-gauge hollow needle. You will likely be asked to take a deep breath; the needle passes through the skin on the exhale.
- Jewelry Insertion: The initial jewelry, almost always a curved barbell (sometimes called a “bananabell”), is immediately inserted into the new channel.
